The future of education: A borderless learning infrastructure - by Christien Bok, innovation manager at SURF |
If there’s one trend that keeps resurfacing in discussions about the future of education, it’s flexibility. Learning pathways that are shaped by micro-credentials, cross-institutional programs, and digital campuses that transcend national borders. Next to the traditional model—one degree, one institution, one country— a more dynamic, international education landscape is emerging. Unfortunately, our infrastructures to support this movement aren’t keeping up. Where the aviation and finance industries cracked the interoperability code long ago—allowing seamless transactions and travel across systems., students still struggle with fragmented systems, incompatible platforms, and administrative hurdles that hinder flexibility in their learning path.
I foresee that in the coming years, we will hear much more about common cross border education infrastructures. We will shift from institutional and national digital transformation projects to the development of interconnected ecosystems. Universities will need to align on common frameworks, and policymakers must recognize that without interoperability, scalable international student mobility remains an illusion. If Europe wants to lead in education, it must embrace a future where digital borders no longer exist. Organizing this on its own terms, will enhance the digital sovereignty of the sector. |
